On the US east coast there are research groups and wildlife experts working to eliminate vertical ropes from areas of crab pot fishing because these ropes are a hazard to right whales and other marine sealife.

I’m working with a group to design and build a device that can be deployed with crab pots to the bottom of the ocean. When a timer goes off the device opens a valve to fill a lift bag from a compressed air bottle, dragging the crab pots to the surface. Once there the device will use GPS to determine its location and then begin broadcasting it over LoRa.

  • Arduino for low power consumption

  • LiPo battery powered

  • Deployable from a few hours to a few days

  • Vessel composed of lift bag, compressed air, valve, and microcontroller

  • GPS on lift bag to acquire surface location

  • LoRa radio to broadcast location over Meshcore
